Relive SportsPro Live 2017

About SportsPro Live

Founded in 2008, SportsPro has become the global leader in Sports business news and insights. Now in its fourth year, SportsPro Live is firmly established as the number one UK event for sports industry insights that will assist you in improving your businesses performance.

This year we focused on the technological revolution overtaking sports, and how these advancements, and the investments going alongside it are assisting sports businesses in commercialising their products, and audiences like never before. We had over 70 speakers and 700 attendees across the two days, and some of the top sports business minds in attendance.

SportsPro Live 2017 answered the key questions about the forces that are reforming the frontiers of the industry. This included what technologies are changing the way people watch and play sport, emerging markets and investors who are creating new centres of power and influence, and new concepts that are changing the idea of what sport actually is.

The event was held over two days, with non-stop content throughout with opportunities to meet and network with peers. The programme provided a mix of interactive opportunities which included workshops, seminars, lunches, dinners, networking drinks and more, alongside headline interviews, presentations and panels answering the questions and issues the industry faces today.

The way people watch everything is changing, and the broadcast industry is changing with it. But what does that mean for sport? At SportsPro Live 2017, we’ll find out more about the OTT revolution that has upended television, how these new viewer habits will affect the value of media rights, and exactly how new camera technologies and experiences like VR fit into the picture.

  • OTT and digital distribution – Netflix of sports; creating OTT channels; clip creation and distribution
  • Building up rights value – how do rights holders make their content attractive and lucrative
  • The rights marketplace – what are the big, traditional players up to? Where is the new money coming from?
  • VR & AR – how to make them work? What will their role be?
  • Broadcast tech – improving the viewer experience through 8K,OTT production, new cameras and technology, etc

Technology has changed sport forever, with performance tools and refereeing aids transforming the action on the field, analytics creating new frames of thought, and big data reconnecting teams and leagues to fans around the world. It is also creating new modes of competition, from eSports to drone racing, and at SportsPro Live, we’ll explain where the challenges and opportunities lie.

  • eSports – video games as sport; sport in video games through licensing and simulation
  • Tech sports – drone racing and other new sports from new tech
  • Refereeing aids – video refereeing; Hawk-Eye; the technology, the experience and the ethics
  • Performance technology – wearables, performance tracking, coaching tools
  • Social media, data capture and CRM
  • Data stories – extracting and communicating insights

Money is flowing across borders in the world of sport and completely altering the landscape. We’ll consider the impact of billion-dollar takeovers, and the influence of aggressive plays from investors in major and emerging markets. We’ll also examine the mark big politics – from Trump to Brexit to Putin – will make on sport, and whether sports politics can get its own house in order.

  • Bidding and hosting – the 2024 race; the city profile; making events work
  • New market expansion – grassroots and elite growth; looking at key stories like NFL, rugby, cricket
  • Territory focus – closer look at major emerging market; effect of issues like Brexit
  • Making investment pay – how new investment is changing F1, UFC, etc; how to identify the right  properties; how to court investment
  • The state of play – rebuilding trust, etc
  • Infrastructure – how to build stadiums, how to pay for them, how to make them work

There have never been more ways for brands to reach fans, or for sport to attract brands, but that choice comes with its own pitfalls. We’ll ask how rights holders can carve out the assets that sponsors really want, and how to tell the stories that get the right kind of attention.

  • Carving out and creating sponsorship space – identifying what sponsors actually want to buy for their money; eg focus on NBA jersey patch?
  • The agency role – what should an agency actually be doing in this space
  • Making the deal, or not – identifying partners; measuring value, etc
  • Brand storytelling – creating a sporting narrative
